TAT, The Tourism Authority of Thailand
reportedly fields over 1,000 complaints a year from visitors claiming
to have been cheated by con artists selling fake gems. (click here)
To aid and protect visitors the The Thai Gem and Retailers Association
in cooperation with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) set
up the Jewel Fest Club (JFC), a nonprofit organization.
Founded in 1997 in response to tourist claims of being cheated by
unscrupulous gem and jewelry retailers, the JFC is actively engaged
in setting professional standards for the retail of quality merchandise
at reasonable prices for tourists and local customers alike.
Be sure to look for the JFC logo before buying gems and jewelry
in Thailand. Members and participating retailers will issue a certificate
upon your purchase. If you are not satisfied with your purchase
you can return it with a money back guarantee under the JFC’s conditions
(less 10% if you return the merchandise to the point of sale within
30 days, and less 20% after 30 days but within 45 days of purchase).
If you are at all in doubt contact The Jewel Fest Club at tel: 0
2630 1390-7 or visit www.jewelfest.com.
